Sermon On The Mount Essay, Research Paper
The Sermon on the MountThroughout the book of Matthew the reader can notice many instances when Jesus wants his people to act differently then they were told to before. During Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, he tells his people how they should live their lives, he also tells them how to pray and how to treat others. Jesus brings up old sayings and adds to them during his sermon asking his people to change the way they live.First, Jesus talks about how his people should live their lives. Jesus says, “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is you reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you” (Matthew 5:11-12). Jesus is saying that his people should not worry about being persecuted or insulted because if they believe in God then they will go to heaven while the one who is persecuting and insulting will not. Jesus also states, “Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see you good deeds and praise your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:15-16). Jesus is saying that if you believe in God that you
Next, Jesus tells his people how to pray to God. He says, “when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to you father” (Matthew 6:6). Jesus is saying that praying to God is a personal thing and does not need to be flaunted. We see examples of this everyday when people do charity just because others are watching. We should do charity and pray because we want to and not because we want to be seen doing it. Jesus clearly makes this point during his sermon. Last, Jesus tells his people how they should treat others. Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery, but I tell you that anyone who looks at a women lustfully has already committed adultery” (Matthew 5:27). Jesus also tells his people that they cannot murder, must turn the other cheek and that they should love their enemies (Matthew 5:21-48). Jesus explains to his people how they should treat others. In conclusion, Jesus tells his people how to live their lives, how to pray to God and how to treat others. Through Matthew 5, 6 and 7 the reader learns many things about their lives and how to live them. by hourunknown@christianska.com
