Anger is one of the most provocative emotions there is. Anger can be used to help or to hurt. Beowulf did not like injustice. For this reason, he always fought the monster that terrorized people. He also enjoyed the fame he received from it. He heard of the injustice of Grendel, who slaughtered Hroathgar’s men. This angered Beowulf and made him want to fight.
Beowulf came face to face with Grendel. They grappled with all their might. Grendel was angry: “Grendel saw that his strength was deserting him, his claws bound fast, Higlac’s brave follower tearing at his hands. Now there is a new battle. Anger against a person is great, but could Beowulf handle a mother’s anger for her beaten son? At first, her anger was winning. She could not pierce through his mail, but scratched and tore all the same. Beowulf started to become angry: “He tossed his sword aside, angry; the steel-edged blade lay where he’d dropped it.” She was besting him, her strength and anger beating his. Then he saw a special sword hammered by giants. The end was near: “And then, savage, now, angry and desperate, lifted it high over his head and struck with all the strength he had left.” Grendel’s mother lay dead, her throat slit. Nonetheless, he was still enraged. His anger burst upon Grendel, taking his head.
It is easily seen how anger affects Beowulf. Grendel’s mother almost destroyed him in anger, but Beowulf’s anger was stronger. He used his anger to fuel him. He used the adrenaline rush to subdue his enemies. Beowulf had a lot of passion. In his fights, he has a want for winning. His anger helps him to conquer the unconquerable. His love of fame helps him too. One thing you can be sure of, he will win at all costs.
