Hockey
Hockey is a great sport that is watched and played by many Americans.
To play hockey there are many things that will be needed to survive. There are three basic parts of hockey that are needed to be learned to play this game. The first one is to learn the rules of hockey, the second is all the measurements of the game, and the third are the basics of how to play.
First of all, the most important thing is to know how to play. There are many rules you have to know. Also, the referees give signals and they mostly mean that a penalty is about to be given. The first rule is high sticking, and that is where an opponent hits another with his stick and the stick is above his shoulder. (Hockey Rules, 3) When someone hits another with his elbow then they will get a penalty for elbowing. When a player turns his stick the long ways and holds his stick with both hands and hits the other player like that then he will get a penalty for cross checking. If a player is driven into the boards by an illegal check then a two-minute penalty will be served in the penalty box. If the puck crosses the center without being touched by a defending opponent icing will be called, and a face off will be at the other side of the rink closest to the defending teams goal. When the player goes into the defending zone and he is ahead of the puck then the referees will call offsides and a face off will occur. On purpose if someone falls on the puck they will receive a minor penalty. If a someone does something ?gross? like losing a piece of their clothing that?s not acceptable then a gross misconduct penalty will be called. The player will receive a 200-dollar fine and might be kicked out of the game. (Official Rules, 102) When any of the players get a penalty they go to the penalty box and there is a guy standing in their timing your penalty. (Ward, Carl, 28) When his time is up then the penalty timekeeper notifies the player and he goes onto the ice to help his teammates. The majority of the time when a player is in the penalty box the other team will score a goal. If they score one then the player who committed the penalty will be allowed out. If a team scores the player is on he will stay there and that is called a short-handed goal. When a player is in there then the offending team has the power play. Some times the players do something really bad like fighting so they might be thrown out of the game and they will each have an even amount of players on the ice. At the end of each game a goalie usually gets pulled out of the game because if he does then they will get an opportunity for six players to be on the ice. When the goalie comes out then all the other teams have to do is throw the puck down the ice. (Rules, 1) In the game of hockey when a team has fewer players, it really affects them because they are all arranged to do something else and different people to guard. If someone is gone it will affects them a lot. Teammates get lots of penalties because hockey is a rough game, but when they end up in the box the coach gets really mad at them. All together in Hockey there are a little over 100 rules.
NHL stands for the National Hockey League. There are five players defending and scoring goals and one goal tender. All together there is a total of twelve men on the ice (Rules Game,1). There is one captain on each team and he is usually the best player. There are also two other assistant captains that are the other two best players. If the captain cant play the one of the assistants will take the captains place and a regular player will take the assistants place. To know whom the captain is he will wear a C on his jersey and the assistants will wear an A. Players have their last name on his jersey along with a number, and that?s how they identify each player. To identify all the different each team they will have representing logos and a name. The name will usually be the main cities name along with he logo. For a player to be benched or for a line change the people cannot go right through a play or be involved in a play. (Sullivan, George, 10-54) From the goal line to back board its eleven feet. From the goal line to the blue line it is sixty feet. From one blue line to the other blue line it is fifty-eight feet. From the blue line to the centerline its twenty-nine feet. To skate from one side to the other its 200 feet. A player does this about twenty times per game. Hockey is one of the most tiring games because after you skate all over the ice then someone checks you it wont feel good. There are two intermissions that are twenty minutes where they get to rest. Each goalie has to guard twelve feet. If the puck goes into the goal it hits a net and that stops it. Every time a goal is scored a light goes on in the back round. When there are doubts about goal there are official score keepers who review the goal many times. Sticks are made with wood and a puck is made with vulcanized rubber. A stick cannot be more than sixty-three inches in length and the blade of the stick cant be more than three inches. Each stick has to be very strong because players can shoot the puck at over 100 miles. Sticks will still break on the ice, and if they do a player will go around checking people until the play stops. If a goalie drops his stick then a player will give him his stick, and he will guard the goal with him. Each skate has to be approved by the hockey league and must have a safety blade. (Official Rules, 8, 9) There are many exceptions for goalkeepers cause they wear more pads than everyone else. There are many specific things that are measured. Their stick is also bigger than regular ones and he carries a mitt. Every player?s equipment costs hundreds of dollars but the team provides it for each player. They wear lots of equipment to protect them from injuries. Overall there are many specific things in hockey.
To play hockey lots of training has to be done. To get onto a hockey team, playing hockey must be very important to that person. Growing up they should be on many different teams every year. To get a scholar ship you must be a captain or an assistant captain through your years of hockey. Many players go onto college teams, but for them to be drafted they must be really good. Balance is a very important part because skating is very important to the game. Backwards and forward skating is necessary. If someone on offense is coming the defensemen must skate backwards because they have guard the goal with the goalie. Teamwork is very important because lots of passing is done. Slap shots and wrist shots are very important because that?s how a goal is usually scored. (Hockey (1), 276) Puck handling is also very important because when a player tries to steal the puck then they will be faked out and that person can continue. Controlling the puck is very important because if you go onto a player side while the puck is behind you then off sides will be called and a face off will be held. Shooting is extremely important because to win a game scoring goals is important.(Hockey (2), 258) If there is a tie in game then an extra periods is added. They will play for five minutes and if someone scores they will automatically win. If no one scores then the game will be called a tie. Each period goes for twenty minutes and after the game is stopped then the time is stopped.(Hockey (3) ) At the beginning of each game the referee drops the puck and the players put their sticks on the ice trying to push the puck to a player next to them to control the puck. One player will take the puck and glide on the ice with his skates towards the goal, and when he thinks that it might be taken from him he will pass it to a player on his team. After the other player receives it then he will continue skating towards the goal and when he gets close he will shoot. If he scores a point will be added to their score. If they don?t score then the goalie may grab it and pass it to his player, and he will skate down to the other side. (Sullivan, George 81-110) That?s basically what will happen throughout the game with some penalties and other little things.
In conclusion, Hockey is one of Americans favorite sports. The three basic part of the game is the rules, the measurements of the rink and players, and how to play. There are hundreds of different kinds of rule to follow. The whole ice arena is 200 feet long to go from one side all the way to the other. Some of the most important things needed to player are to know how to skate, keep balance, puck handle, and work with your team. Overall, the NHL is a fun sport to watch and a great sport to play.
